This is one of the earliest drawings I did in college. I was learning charcoal for the first time and was also experimenting with grey pastels. The same grey pastels became a favorite of mine during this time period. Drawing value usually entails drawing shadow on an otherwise white plane. With these pastels I had a bit of freedom to draw light instead. It might not sound like that big of a difference, but the thought process is completely different, and in some ways easier. This was done from a small ceramic sculpture of a crab with a magnifying glass in its center. Even though a lot of the techniques I used here are a bit immature compared to what I would do these days, it is still one of my favorite drawings that I have done. This was in part due to me having learned so much during the process.
